Public Cloud Computing delivers IT-service capability within the public Internet, allowing users to tap into an almost seamless resource of computing capability, based on their demands. Critically, these services are delivered by third party organisations, who not only develop and deploy IT, but also hold information within their own data centre environments.
Private Cloud Computing enables the same functionality as public cloud computing, but restricts the cloud to one held and managed by the enterprise itself. It remains accessed by the LAN, but is also accessed via secure IP connectivity. As with a public cloud, private cloud computing allows for some level of utility computing, whilst retaining all information and capability within the controlled enterprise data centre. Critically, it requires substantial investment in infrastructure to maintain.
