Data migrations can be very risky and costly, particularly for those organisations that need to perform them on a regular basis. Migrations can require applications or hosts be taken offline as data is moved and this impacts the end-user through increased down time.
Storage virtualisation is a powerful weapon that increases the success rate and decreases the complexity of the data migration process. Other benefits include simplified provisioning and the ability to replicate data across different manufacturers' storage products.

A recent worldwide Enterprise Strategy Group (ESG) survey found that data migrations are extremely common. Server and storage equipment replacements, relocation, consolidation, lease renewals, and load balancing all drive the need to migrate data on a regular basis. While data migrations are generally perceived to be a rare occurence, a suprising number of organisations surveyed performed migrations on a weekly or monthly basis.
ESG also found that the majority of organisations experienced problems with data migrations, with more than half reporting extended or unexpected downtime, and a third experiencing application performance issues. Many users consider migrating data to be a complex process - the majority of respondents take more than two weeks to plan an implementation and many of the migrations require more than 5 people to complete.
